Agricola, Britain's first Roman Governer, decreed to tame the 'wild barbarians' of the North but it was left to Hadrian to defend the boundaries and build a barrier stretching from Solway Firth in the West to the North Sea in the East.
We will be visiting Hadrian's Wall Country at different points from Walltown to Steel Rigg.
In Spring, bluebells carpet military roads and ancient forests, dawn choruses give way to busy feeding forays.
In Autumn, mists lie heavy in the Whin Sills and valleys.
We also visit Allen Bank near Hexham. This is a river gorge cutting through ancient woodland. As well as an abundance of wildlife there is a rich variety of plant life.
In Autumn, fallen leaves carpet the crags and river banks; grey wagtails and dippers dart and feed from rock to rock.
